Living in Spain is different from being on holiday
Many people fall in love with Spain during a holiday. The sunlight, the relaxed atmosphere, the cozy terraces — it feels like coming home. But living in Spain is fundamentally different from being on holiday.
In daily life you deal with administration, local rules, a different healthcare system and Spanish bureaucracy. From opening a bank account to understanding tax rules: it requires preparation and the right information.
With the right guidance you prevent surprises and start your Spanish adventure with confidence and overview.
What is life like in Spain?
Life in Spain has a calmer pace than in northern Europe. People live more outdoors, the days are longer and social life often takes place on terraces and squares. Outdoor living, the sun and the space are experienced by virtually all emigrants as big advantages.
At the same time, there are cultural differences you shouldn't underestimate. Appointments sometimes go differently, shops close in the afternoon and official procedures take more time than you're used to.
It's important to leave with realistic expectations. Spain offers a wonderful quality of life, but it requires adaptation and patience — especially in the beginning.
What do you need to arrange to live in Spain?
An overview of the most important practical matters.
NIE and residency
The NIE number is required for almost everything in Spain. If you stay longer than three months, you also need residency. Both are essential for legal stay.
Municipal registration
The empadronamiento is your registration with the Spanish municipality. This is mandatory and gives you access to local services such as healthcare.
Health insurance
You can choose between the Spanish public system and private insurance. The right choice depends on your age, income and situation.
Bank account
A Spanish bank account is almost always needed for rent, mortgage, utilities and tax payments. Open one preferably before your move.
Taxes
If you live in Spain for more than 183 days a year, you are a tax resident. This means you pay tax in Spain on your worldwide income.
Car and transport
With foreign plates you can drive as a tourist for a maximum of six months. If you become a resident, you must register your car on Spanish plates.
Housing
Whether you buy or rent, inform yourself well about contracts, taxes and local rules. Buying a property as a foreigner is possible but requires guidance.
