NIE or residency in Spain: what do you need?

Many people confuse these two. We clearly explain the difference and what you need in your situation.

Why this difference is so important

Many people think a NIE number and residency are the same thing.

    They are not.

If you misunderstand this, it can cause delays, wrong applications and problems with taxes and administration. That's why it's important to understand this correctly from the start.

    Briefly explained

    What is a NIE?

A NIE number (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is a personal identification number for foreigners in Spain. You need it for buying a house, opening a bank account, working and tax matters.

👉 Without a NIE you can't arrange anything in Spain.

    What is residency?

Residency means you officially live in Spain. You are then registered as a resident, liable for tax in Spain and part of the Spanish system.

👉 This is your official residential status in Spain.

What is the difference between NIE and residency?
